Skill 6: Immediate Traffic

After all the optimization, you think your pages are ready to rank well in the search engine results. Your store is open, and the clock is ticking on the web store hosting (remember the monthly fee) and also on the investment that you’ve made in all these resources to pick up the required skills. So why aren’t people flocking to your site? Because the search engines have not crawled your site. The estimates are from 1 to two months for the search engines to get around to crawling your site after an initial submission request. For Google it could be a little longer. So what do you do? You would like to re-coup some of that money you’ve layed out. But you’ve got to have customers visit your site and buy your products. What do you need to do? ADVERTISE!

No, don’t go out and rent space in the newspaper or buy a 30-second ad on National Cable TV. You’re looking for immediate results, and at a price you can afford. Google, Overture and soon MSN can come to the rescue. Google has something called Adwords. You know when you do a search on Google, those Ads that appear on the right hand side of the page? Well, that’s all paid advertising. It’s done on a CPC basis, which stands for cost per click. You can go to Google and sign up for Adwords in about 10 minutes. You then build a campaign, tell the campaign which words and phrases to target, and write an ad. Once you’ve completed those tasks, which will take about 30-minutes or so, your ad will begin to appear under the search terms you requested in 1 to 3 hours. Traffic can be immediate after that. Or, it might take some time…depending on your expertise at pricing your CPC, and in your ad writing technique. And, once you’ve mastered these techniques they work with any cost per click service. You can use the same techniques at Overture and soon at MSN. In the latest issue of SE News they are saying that the contract for the ads appearing at MSN expires in Summer 2006. And MSN is saying they are putting their own CPC system together to replace the expiring contract.

Most companies who try Google Adwords do so without any training. They assume that if they just write an ad and have it appear on the first page of Google for the targeted keywords, that’s all they need to do. Before you go down that path, I suggest you simply go to Perry Marshall’s site. Perry has written a book, a course on getting the most out of Google Adwords for the cheapest rate AND get big results…the kind you are looking for, IMMEDIATE RESULTS!

What I would like you to do is simply go to this site and read the comments sent in from people who have purchased the Google Adwords course. These testimonials will easily reflect all the pitfalls that have been suffered through by these folks before they took the course and how the course changed the direction of their Google Adword campaign.

The techniques you learn here can be applied to the other CPC programs as well.

Another method of getting immediate results is to sign up with Yahoo Submit. Yahoo will take the images and descriptions of your products right out of your catalog at your web store and advertise those products when an appropriate shopping search request has been made by a customer at Yahoo. Now the CPC rates are a little high for this venture but….remember the 13 million reasons that you decided to have Yahoo host your web store? This is a sure way to get some of them to visit you.

Along with Yahoo, there are independent shopping catalogs who have a big enough following that it is worthwhile setting up accounts with them. I have accounts with both Yahoo submit and Bizrate, which has since been bought by Shopzilla. Both are bringing me traffic and sales.
